The Treepod name is a combination of the words "tree" and "pod". The "tree" portion is a play on the "family tree", and the "pod" portion has several relevant meanings – a safe enclosure, a small group, and a derivative of the word "tripod", which is used to help take pictures.

Treepod is based in Silicon Valley.
